Geoscan 801

Drone remote control

Compact, ergonomic remote control with high-resolution touchscreen display. It allows you to control the drone in manual and automatic modes, as well as receive Full HD video in real time.

Geoscan 801 is a powerful drone with video and thermal imaging cameras for various types of photography.

The quadcopter comes with a remote control, charger, four batteries, and a shipping case.

The Geoscan team needed to create a controller for the 801 video drone that would be compatible with any other Geoscan drones.

The Geoscan team did some internal engineering and ergonomic research, but after some time of unsuccessfully trying to bring the design to fruition, they turned to us. Above you can see the original shape of the remote control.

We study the Geoscan 801 drone to extract key design elements and translate them into a remote controller.

We develop several design concepts, varying in overall feel and details.

Going through several iterations of concept refinement. Define graphics and icons for the concept. Finalize a concept that everyone is happy with.

We develop a 3D CAD model based on a conceptual illustration of the design. We go through a long iterative process of its refinement and detailing.

Print out mock-ups and check their ergonomics and aesthetics. Identify areas for improvement and incorporate them into the model. Repeat the process until we achieve a satisfactory result.

We think through the location and design of buttons, joysticks and wheels to ensure comfortable operation and avoid accidental recall of commands.

Exploring the design and texture of handles at the appliance store.
Textured handles create a premium feel and are pleasant to the touch.

We are developing several variants of the handle pattern. The "stripe" texture gives the remote control some subliminal appeal.

The other texture is based on hexagons because Geoscan already uses this type of pattern in some other products.

Geoscan prints the remote control and tests it with mass and center of gravity like the real one. After analysis, we move on to finalizing the design.

We make edits to address technological issues discovered during prototyping.

Fix and refine the remaining details, which include wheels, buttons, icons and labels, textures, angles, etc.

Engage an experienced graphic designer to define graphics and icons.
After a few iterations, we finalize the graphics.

We are developing several CMF variants that define the colors and textures of the console. The colors used are the colors of the drone 801, which enhances the sense of family.

Industrialization

We carry out author's supervision in the process of engineering development and production of the console in connection with the emergence of new technical requirements and technological nuances.

Geoscan produces samples and tests them on future customers - emergency crews, firefighters, etc.

Result

The Geoscan 801 quadcopter remote control has a number of advantages that make it convenient and effective for many tasks that require visual control.

The intuitive layout makes it easy for beginners to navigate through functions and settings. The ergonomic layout of buttons and switches provides quick, stress-free access, while the lightweight design prevents fatigue during prolonged use.

It's portable, with folding antennas and removable sticks that are stored in a special compartment.

The connectors on the rear surface have rubber pads and engraving to protect them from water and dirt.

The Geoscan 801 drone remote control serves as an ideal tool, offering users a convenient and efficient means of real-time data collection.

Publications

Test a pre-production model in various situations when using the drone for firefighting, rescue, flood monitoring, oil spills or accidents.

According to experts, the Geoscan 801 drone is versatile and durable, with a user-friendly remote control and long flight time, making it a convenient and effective tool for construction monitoring.

Testimonial

When we started working with Rodion Usaev, we already had an engineering prototype of our remote control, and the layout and ergonomics were partially worked out. But at the same time, we could not figure out how to make our remote control beautiful, looking stylish and organic with the conditions of use.

When we received the first presentation with 3 design options from Rodion, we realized that this was the fresh flow of ideas we needed. As a result of our work together, despite the tight deadlines, we were able to get a cool design that is both unique and recognizable, and the additional work on ergonomics significantly improved usability.

It is also worth noting that after the design work was completed, Rodion helped us to achieve an organic link between the technological features of production, functionality and appearance of the device.
