Geoscan 801

Drone Remote Control

Compact, ergonomic remote control with high-resolution touchscreen display. It allows you to control the drone in manual and automatic modes, as well as receive Full HD video in real-time.

Geoscan 801 is a powerful drone with video and thermal imaging cameras for various types of shooting.

The quadcopter kit includes a remote control, a charger, four batteries and a transport case.

The Geoscan team needed to create a controller for the 801 video drone that was compatible with any other Geoscan drones.

The Geoscan team did internal engineering and ergonomic research, but after some unsuccessful attempts to get the design to mind, they contacted us. Above you can see the original shape of the remote control.

Studying the Geoscan 801 drone to extract key design elements from it and implement them in a remote controller.

We develop several design concepts that differ in general feel and details.

Going through several iterations of finalizing the concept. Defining the graphics and icons of the concept. We are finalizing the concept that suits everyone.

We develop a 3D CAD model based on a conceptual design illustration. We go through a long iterative process of its refinement and detailing.

We print out the layouts and check their ergonomics and aesthetics. We identify areas for improvement and implement them into the model. Repeat the process until we achieve a satisfactory result.

We think over the location and design of buttons, joysticks and wheels to ensure convenient control and avoid accidental command calls.

Studying the design and texture of handles in a hardware store.
Textured handles create a premium feel and are pleasant to the touch.

Developing several options for the handle pattern. The texture of the “stripe” gives the remote control a kind of subconscious appeal.

The other texture is based on hexagons because Geoscan already uses this kind of pattern in some other products.

Geoscan prints the remote control and tests it with mass and center of gravity like the real thing. After the analysis, we move on to finalizing the design.

Making edits to solve the technological problems discovered during the creation of the prototype.

Fixing and clarifying the remaining details, including wheels, buttons, icons and shortcuts, textures, tilt angles, etc.

We involve an experienced graphic designer to determine the graphics and icons.
After several iterations, we finalize the development of the graphics.

We develop several versions of CMF that determine the colors and textures of the console. The colors used are the colors of the 801 drone, which enhances the feeling of family.

Industrialization

We carry out field supervision in the process of engineering development and production of the console in connection with the emergence of new technical requirements and technological nuances.

Geoscan produces samples and tests them on future customers – emergency crews, firefighters, etc.

Result

The remote control of the Geoscan 801 quadcopter has a number of advantages that make it convenient and effective for solving many tasks that require visual control.

Intuitive for beginners, the layout makes it easy to navigate through features and settings. The ergonomic layout of the buttons and switches allows for quick, stress-free access, and the lightweight design prevents fatigue from prolonged use.

It is portable, with foldable antennas and removable sticks that are stored in a special compartment.

The connectors on the back are equipped with rubber pads and engraving to protect against water and dirt.

The remote controller of the Geoscan 801 drone serves as an ideal tool, offering users a convenient and efficient means to collect data in real-time.

Publications

Pre-production sample test in a variety of situations when using the drone for firefighting, rescue, flood, oil spill monitoring, or accident monitoring.

According to experts, the Geoscan 801 drone is versatile and durable, with a convenient control panel, and a long flight time, making it a convenient and effective tool for monitoring construction.

Feedback

When we started working with Rodion Usaev, we already had an engineering prototype of our remote control, and the layout and ergonomics were partially worked out. But at the same time, we could not understand how to make our remote control beautiful, looking stylish, organic with the conditions of use.

When we received Rodion’s first presentation with three design options, we realized that this was exactly what we needed—a fresh stream of ideas. As a result of our collaboration—despite the tight deadlines—we were able to create a great design that is both unique and recognizable, and the additional work on ergonomics significantly improved the user experience.

It is also worth noting that after the completion of the design work, Rodion helped us achieve an organic combination of technological features of production, functionality and appearance of the device.
