The Pioneer Mini 2 is a compact, next-generation educational drone from Geoscan. Thanks to its onboard artificial intelligence, it is capable of autonomous flight, object recognition, and real-time machine learning. The quadcopter combines advanced technology, a compact design, and extensive programming capabilities, making it an ideal tool for the school and university laboratories of the future.

TASK

Geoscan needed to develop a unique design for the second version of the Pioneer Mini quadcopter, its payload and accessories, which would become the conceptual basis for the future Pioneer line of drones.

The main goal of the project was to create a memorable, functional and ergonomic design that would allow the company to stand out from competitors in the market and provide Pioneer Mini 2 to all institutions teaching UAV control and programming in Russia.

ANALYTICS

We conduct research of the copter market, including direct and indirect competitors in the world market. We analyze their cost ratio, design and functionality.

CONCEPT

We study the trends in the toy market.

Based on the research, we identify the following important criteria that a design must meet:

Personalization, which allows you to show your personality and visually separate your drones during team play.
Rugged housing with no small parts, able to withstand long periods of heavy use.
Interesting but “neutral” appearance to satisfy a wide youth age group.
Intuitive interaction that is understandable even for the youngest users.

Sketching ideas.

We select 3 sketch concepts for further work, build conceptual 3D models and demonstrate them to the customer.

THE CONCEPT OF DYNAMISM

Laconic surfaces in combination with slopes and roundings create the image of a fast and maneuverable copter.

Minimalist geometry / Rectilinear surfaces / Smooth transitions / Trapezoidal details / Color accents

THE CONCEPT OF CURIOSITY

Soft surfaces wrapped in a central stripe create an image of reliability. Rounded corners are associated with maneuverability and streamlining.

Streamlined geometry / Customizable / Color accents

SMOOTH CONCEPT

A concise concept with smooth surfaces that create a friendly, delicate look contrasting with selectively added sharp edges.

Dominance of smooth shapes / Contrast with sharp edges / Smooth transitions

After reviewing the proposed design concepts, Geoscan asks to combine the outstanding features of the first and second concepts in a new version. We are developing two new options, one more friendly and one more rational.

FRIENDLY DESIGN

Minimalism does not distract from the educational process. Natural shapes provide a comfortable tactile perception. The ergonomic battery compartment makes it easy and quick to replace batteries.

RATIONAL DESIGN

The combination of soft and strict shapes creates the image of a more serious educational drone.

DETAILING

Geoscan approves the first design, noting some solutions from the second. They examine the result using a mock-up and share an updated 3D engineering model of the aircraft with a list of desired upgrades.

We are updating the design, and the new version looks much better due to its reduced size, more harmonious and lighter look.

RESULT

As a result of the project, we created a design that combines manufacturability, thoughtful ergonomics and visual purity. The shaping of the body is laconic, but not primitive – there are no redundant details in it, while the drone looks modern, confident and “smart”.

The soft contours of the case make the device visually friendly and physically less traumatic — especially important in educational environments where the device often interacts with users’ hands.

We’ve also provided options for personalization: the top cover and legs can be easily replaced, and the body itself allows for sticker decoration, making each drone unique and closer to its audience.

Integrated rotor protection reliably protects the propellers from shocks and falls, keeping the aircraft operational in active operation. It is easy and intuitive to attach, eliminating assembly errors, which is especially valuable when working with children and beginners.

When developing the design, we sought to create not just a training tool, but a reliable partner and friend who will accompany the user’s first steps in the world of technology, inspiring them to learn, explore and create with real passion.

AUTHOR'S ACCOMPANIMENT

No successful project is limited to design – then comes the stage of engineering development and industrialization, which takes place with our close involvement. It is we who help to preserve, and sometimes even improve the original concept, taking into account all the technical nuances.

In the process of industrialization, engineers create an accurate 3D model and make many technical adjustments. We accompany this work by supporting the Geoscan team in maintaining the high quality of the project, identifying potential shortcomings and offering effective solutions. Some of them are listed below.

We point out the shortcomings and suggest improvements to various details.

We offer an improvement in the shape of the legs to harmonize and lighten the look.

We are working on options for perforating the lower surface, taking into account technological changes.

We offer solutions to improve the design of the frame and the last parts.

After making all the necessary changes, the Geoscan command prints the final layout. Everyone is satisfied with the result.

Pioneer Mini 2 is ready for pre-sales and a press release at the Geoscan Technologies 2025 conference.

FEEDBACK

Together with USAEV DESIGN, we developed an educational quadcopter “Pioneer Mini 2”. Rodion and his team have created a stylish, modern design that perfectly reflects the concept of our product. At the same time, they not only offered beautiful solutions, but also paid attention to technical requirements, helping to find the optimal balance between aesthetics and functionality.

It was especially valuable that Rodion always promptly answered questions, made corrections and was open to dialogue. His professionalism and ability to hear the request made the work truly comfortable and productive. It was very pleasant to work with a person who loves his work!
